Spiders Drop Finale In Myrtle Beach To St. John’s

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In the finale of its three-game weekend in Myrtle Beach, the University of Richmond baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to a red-hot St. John's team that is currently unbeaten this spring.
Graduate student Jonathan de Marte had two of the Spiders' five hits, including a big RBI double, but it wasn't enough as the Red Storm held the potent Richmond offense at bay for most of the afternoon.
Eight different pitchers took the hill for Richmond, including three making their collegiate debuts. A four-run fifth inning by St. John's proved to be the difference.
“We just didn't make the plays when we needed to make them today,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said. “St. John's is a good team that is going to take advantage of opportunities that you give them and that's what they did. We weren't able to get much going offensively, but that just means we'll get back to work this week.”
Graduate student Zach Grossfeld and SJU's Nick Mondak locked in a duel early on before SJU was able to get a run on the board in the top of the third.
Richmond got on the board in the home half of the fourth when Kyle Adams ripped a two-out single back up the middle and came around two pitches later when de Marte launched a double into left center field to tie the game at 1-1.
SJU rallied in the their half of the fifth, plating four runs on three hits and an error to take a 5-1 lead.
The Spiders would try and chip away at the lead, getting runners on second and third with one out in the sixth. Adams would deliver an RBI groundout to make it 5-2, but the Red Storm would get out of the jam without any further damage.
SJU added two insurance runs in the eighth, but Richmond responded with an RBI single from Vinny Capra to make it a 7-3 game.
de Marte would try and start a Spider rally in the ninth with a leadoff single, but that's SJU would get out of the jam and seal the win.
Richmond opens its home slate on Wednesday afternoon when they host the Lancers of Longwood in a 2:30 p.m. showdown.
