BRONX - The Richmond Spiders opened a 20-point first-half lead and never looked back en route to a 70-48 win at Fordham on Saturday.
The victory kept the Spiders (17-11, 11-5) in third place in the Atlantic 10 with two games remaining. It also marked UR's fifth conference road victory.
Richmond shot 50 percent from the field for the seventh time this year as the Spiders continue to lead the league in FG shooting in conference play. UR knocked down nine threes and assisted on 21 of 27 made field goals. UR also outrebounded Fordham, 33-26.
Playing against one of the country's top teams in turnover margin, the Spiders protected the ball and forced Fordham into turnovers. Richmond won the turnover battle, 18-13, and outscored Fordham 18-7 in points off turnovers.
Freshman De'Monte Buckingham continued his hot play against the Rams. He scored a career-high 22 points with four threes against Fordham back in January. Today, Buckingham hit a career-high five threes and finished with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore Khwan Fore set a new career high with 12 assists, the most by any Spider in a single game since 1996. His 12 assists tied for fifth-most in a single game in school history. Fore also scored six points and grabbed seven boards.
T.J. Cline scored 12 points with six rebounds, and ShawnDre' Jones reached double figures with 11 points.
Marshall Wood came off the bench for Richmond and knocked down three threes, one year removed from knocking down seven treys at Fordham last year.
The Rams hit three threes early and took an 11-10 lead on a basket from Javontae Hawkins. But Fore converted two from the line and Wood fired in two threes to put UR up 18-13 with 10:31 left in the first half. Richmond's lead did not go under two possessions for the rest of the game.
The Spider defense locked in on Fordham in the final eight minutes of the half as Richmond ballooned a 20-16 lead to 40-20 at the halftime break.
Fordham cut the lead to 14 with several threes to start the second half, but buckets from Cline stopped the Fordham momentum. When the Rams began to threaten again with a 55-42 margin at the 7:45 mark, Fore escaped from a three-person trap at midcourt to find Cline who slammed a fast break dunk.
A quick seven points from Nick Sherod put the margin back over 20 points and the Spiders were able to get playing time for Paul Friendshuh, Chase Fletcher, Jesse Pistokache and Keith Oddo in the final minutes. Friendshuh hit a layup for his first points of the season.
UR will face its last road test on Wednesday, March 1 at Massachusetts.
