RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond (14-9, 8-3) shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to run out to an 84-75 win over George Washington (12-11, 4-6) on Hall of Fame Saturday in the Robins Center.
The Spiders played a crisp two halves of offense with T.J. Cline and Khwan Fore leading the way. Richmond hit seven threes and knocked down 30 field goals in the win.
Cline tallied his 10th double-double of the season with another team-leading effort. He scored 26 points on 8-of-12 shooting with three threes. He also grabbed 13 rebounds, all on the defensive end, to go with three assists. Cline knocked down 7-of-8 free throws in the win.
Khwan Fore continued his strong play in games against George Washington. He scored a career-high 24 points, capped by a rim-rattling dunk in the final minutes to seal the win.
ShawnDre' Jones added 17 points, five assists and five rebounds in the win.
The Colonials were led by Tyler Cavanaugh's 23-point, 10-rebound effort, while Patrick Steeves had 12 points.
After falling behind 9-2 to start the game, Richmond erupted on a 25-4 run to build a 27-13 lead after a traditional three-point play from Cline. During the run, the Spiders shot 9-of-13 and were electrified by several strong minutes from reserve Joe Kirby. Kirby scored four points including an acrobatic twisting layup.
Jones' heave three-pointer at the end of a shot clock from halfway to halfcourt ignited the defensive effort and proved that it would be the Spiders' day.
GW cut the lead back to 46-34 by halftime, but six quick points from Cline and Jones to start the second half pushed the Spiders' advantage.
The Colonials eventually made a run to cut the margin to 56-50 but the lead never got under six and a three-pointer from Buckingham put it back to double digits with seven minutes remaining.
Richmond held on with free throws in the final minutes and a run-out dunk by Fore sealed the game with 34 seconds remaining.
The Spiders will have the week off before traveling to La Salle next Saturday.
