Spiders Tied for First After Round One of A-10 Championship
04/28/2017 | Men's Golf
ORLANDO, Fla. – It was a slow start for the University of Richmond men's golf team at Grand Cypress Golf Club in the opening round of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, but it's all about how you finish. The Spiders closed the back nine on fire, finishing with a team score of -15, 273 to tie for the lead after round one.
George Washington was able to match that score to join the Spiders atop the team leaderboard with VCU (-9, 279) trailing in third.
Richmond freshman and Orlando native Zack Justice fired, hands down, the best round of his young career, a -6, 66, which is tied for the individual lead. Justice had yet to break 70 during his debut campaign and today was just the third under-par round of his career. Clearly he's happy to be home, playing on a course he's very familiar with.
Justice wasn't the only Spider to break par though. In fact, every Spider broke par on Friday. Keegan Hoff continued his impressive senior season with a -4, 68, which is currently good for a tie for fifth. Freshman Andrew Sciarretta made it a banner day for the Spider youth, bagging a -3, 69 and working his way into a tie for ninth. Matthew Lowe went eagle, birdie over the final two holes to get to -2 and a card a 70 while Mark Reilly took a -1, 71. Richmond was the only team in the tournament to put all five players under par for the day.
The -15, 273 is not only the lowest single round for the team this season but also the deepest south of par the team has gone at any point this season. The team will look to roll this momentum into round two tomorrow and will occupy the final five tee times, playing with representatives from GW and VCU.
Round Two Tee Times:
9:45 – Mark Reilly
9:54 – Matthew Lowe
10:03 – Andrew Sciarretta
10:12 – Keegan Hoff
10:21 – Zack Justice
