08/10/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – As the 2017 season approaches, University of Richmond women's soccer head coach Peter Albright has announced the players chosen to captain the squad.
Â
Seniors Lexi Prillaman, Alexis Pringle, Olivia Aha, Katie Brennan and Lindsey Williams will all serve as captains, and will use their experience and leadership skills to guide the Spiders in their final collegiate season.
Â
"We began in the spring by posting a Job Description for the position of Team Captain," Albright explained. "This outlined the responsibilities and the qualifications needed to be a successful candidate. After soliciting applications from any team member wishing to take on the leadership responsibility. Nine players submitted letters to me, citing reasons why they felt that they would do a good job if selected. We then put the nominees to a vote, and it was an overwhelming support of the concept of leadership shared between these five remarkable women."
Â
After narrowing missing postseason play in 2016, the five captains have stepped up to serve as an example for the rest of their team in the quest for an Atlantic 10 title.
Â
"As we began the preseason, the captains have taken deliberate steps to exert their influence on the team," Albright added. "More than any group in recent memory, this group of captains seems determined to bend this team to their will. It has been a joyful experience to watch these young women grow into confident, intentional leaders. I am excited to watch and support them as they try to create something special."
Â
Prillaman enters her second season as a team captain, and will look to capitalize on a breakout 2016 season. The attacker lead the team in goals, assists and points as a junior, while finishing second in the conference in assists and assists per game. A Second Team All-Atlantic 10 and First Team All-State honoree, Prillaman enters 2017 in third all-time in career assists at Richmond.
Â
Prillaman on the 2017 season:
"There isn't a doubt in my mind that this team will go far this year. We're approaching everything a bit differently, and are ultimately striving to become the best we can possibly be. I'm so incredibly honored to be leading such a special group of girls that have a desire to improve and grow everyday. I couldn't ask for anything more."
Â
Pringle also enters her second season as a team captain. A force on the defensive end, she played in 15 games last season while battling through an injury. The defender logged one assist on the year, while taking three shots. She's played in 50 games for the Spiders, starting 47.
Â
Pringle on the 2017 season:
"Our goal for this season is to make sure that we never settle. This team has so much potential and we want to do everything that we can to reach if not exceed that. That means pushing each other in every way possible and being critical of all of our performances, especially wins. While no team is or ever will be perfect, we are striving to be the best Richmond Spiders Soccer team that we can be."
Â
Aha played in all 19 games in 2016, finishing second on the team with five assists. The midfielder tied for eighth in the conference in assists and assists per game, avoiding tackles with skilled footwork before serving the attack line for the shot. She took 21 shots on the year.
Â
Aha on the 2017 season:
"Our goal this year is to compete for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The entire team has a new energy this year. We've been challenging each other every day during preseason, knowing that we need to put in all the hard work in order to be the best we can. We want to be strong, fast, and well prepared once the season begins."
Â
Brennan returns to goal in 2017 after suffering a season-ending injury last year. She started five games last season, finishing the year with 16 saves and a .667 save percentage in goal. She has logged 110 saves through her career, placing eighth all-time among Richmond goalkeepers.
Â
Brennan on the 2017 season:
"I think we've made a lot of progress in just our first week as a new team. We have a lot of talent from both returners and newcomers, and right now we're working on putting it all together. I think that if we continue to put in the work and get better every day, this team can win a championship together."
Â
Williams played in 17 games for the Spiders last season in the midfield. She tied for third on the team with four assists on the year, while taking 11 shots of her own. She has had a presence for the Spiders throughout her career, playing in 50 games and starting 32.
Â
Williams on the 2017 season:
"Everyone had high hopes coming into preseason and that is definitely carrying over into how we are playing and progressing every day. We are all extremely driven and determined to have an amazing season while also bettering ourselves individually, as a team and as a family – both on and off the field."
