Late Goal Sends Dukes Past Spiders, 2-1
08/27/2017 | Women's Soccer
HARRISONBURG, Va. – A defensive battle did not go in favor of the University of Richmond women's soccer team on Thursday night, as the Spiders fell at James Madison, 2-1.
Â
JMU started the game strong, with an outpouring of offensive pressure, but the Spiders and senior goalkeeper Katie Brennan were able to keep the Dukes off the board in the opening 90 minutes.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Spiders put on the pressure, taking five second-half shots compared to just a single shot in the opening period.
Â
The two teams battled back and forth, but the Dukes found the back of the net first when Lizzy Lazzaro buried a free kick into the bottom left corner in the 78th minute of play.
Â
With building pressure and a one-goal deficit in the closing minutes, the Spiders were able to capitalize in the 86th minute to tie the score. Freshman Olivia Tripodi threw the ball in to senior Lexi Prillaman, who sent the ball across the goal to Alyssa Walker for a goal from six yards out.
Â
The celebration was short-lived, as JMU took the lead for good less than a minute later on a close-range header from Haley Crawford.
Â
Despite the loss, Brennan had a stellar night in goal, making five saves and forcing most of the Duke shots wide.
Â
JMU outshot the Spiders 18-6, but held just a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Dukes also held a 5-4 corner kick advantage.
Â
The Spiders continue their string on non-conference road games when they travel to take on Maryland on Thursday, August 31. Kickoff in College Park is set for 7:30pm.
