UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (7-11, 2-3 Atlantic 10) was resilient on Sunday afternoon. The Spiders erased a massive, first half deficit and had chances down the stretch to steal this game but Davidson (7-11, 2-3 A-10) was steadfast in the end to come away with the victory, 68-65.
The Spiders put four players in double figures for the first time since Nov. 22 when six reached that benchmark opposite Savannah State. Alex Parson paced the group with 18 for the second-straight game. Dee Hatcher tossed in 14 to go with four rebounds and two assists while Micaela Parson and Karleigh Wike each added 10 points. Wike pulled down a team-high eight boards with Micaela and Tonysha Curry each close behind at seven apiece.
Davidson came out hot in this one while Richmond struggled to find its shot. The Wildcats built a 10-0 advantage before the Spiders got on the board with five-straight from Alex. By the end of the first quarter however, Davidson had built an 11-point lead, 21-10, holding the home side to just 20 percent shooting from the floor.
At the 7:51 mark in the second quarter, Davidson had its largest lead of the game, 25-12. To this point in the season, the largest lead Richmond has overcome for a victory was a nine-point deficit it faced opposite Fairfield on the road in the season-opener. The Spiders began to chip away, nonetheless. Hatcher scored four of the next six Spider points and Alex capped off the run with a three ball to make it a six-point game with 3:57 left and it was game on.
By halftime, Davidson was holding a seven-point lead, 35-28. Richmond won the second quarter, 18-14, and shot 36.8 percent in doing so despite going just 1-6 from deep. The three-point line proved to be unkind to the Spiders in this one.
The Spiders were more efficient in the third quarter and the defense stepped up. The Davidson lead was cut to one on two occasions but the Wildcats had an answer each time. Hatcher converted through contact at the 4:04 mark to make it a one-point game but her free throw was untrue in the first real attempt of the game for UR to tie it up.
The game turned to the fourth quarter with Davidson on top by five. The deficit grew to nine by the 8:22 mark but a Kailyn Fee triple got the train back on the tracks with 8:06 to play. Davidson increased its lead to seven a couple of time but an Alicia Hudalla three ball at 6:13 made it a four-point game. Alex knocked in a three ball at 2:35 and Wike finished off a nice feed from Hudalla with 1:18 left to make it just a one-point game.
That proved to be the final field goal for Richmond in the game however. Davidson made free throws down the stretch but even with that Alex found a clean look from three in the closing seconds in an attempt to time the game. The ball rimmed out and clock it zero, giving the Wildcats the victory.
Richmond now turns its attention to one of the top teams in the A-10 in George Mason. The Spiders will tip off with the Patriots in Fairfax, Va. at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 17).
