Spiders Put It All Together To Beat VCU, 67-52, In Capital City Classic
01/17/2018 | Men's Basketball
The Richmond Spiders played their most complete game of the season Wednesday night at the Siegel Center, dominating on both ends of the court in a 67-52 win over VCU, their first victory against their Richmond rivals since 2015.Â
Khwan Fore opened the scoring with a three-pointer in the first minute, Jacob Gilyard put Richmond up 5-3 with a driving layup moments later and the Spiders never relented, holding the lead for the remainder of the game en route to their third-biggest win ever against the Rams and largest since 2003.Â
Richmond led by as many as 10 in the first half and took a 34-27 lead into intermission behind 10 first-half points from Grant Golden. The Spiders made their first six shots coming out of the break to stretch the lead to 14 and were never seriously threatened after that, building the lead to as many as 21.Â
It was the Spiders first victory against VCU since a 67-63 double overtime win on February 25, 2015. Richmond snapped a pair of six-game streaks with the victory: six straight losses to VCU and six straight losses in true road games dating back to last season.Â
Richmond hit on 54 percent of its field goal attempts, the second straight game the Spiders have made more than half of their shots from the field and the only two times the Spiders have made more than 50 percent of their field goals this season.Â
Grant Golden led four Spiders in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Nick Sherod chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds and has now scored at least 10 points in six of his last eight games. De'Monte Buckingham finished one rebound shy of his third double-double, totaling 12 points and nine rebounds and increasing his shooting percentage in conference play to a team-high 54 percent. Jacob Gilyard scored 11 points and added a career-best eight assists, tied for the most by a Spider in a game this season.Â
Defensively, Richmond held VCU to 52 points and 34 percent shooting from the field, both season lows for the Rams and the fewest points ever scored in a conference game by the Rams since they joined the A-10 in 2012.
Richmond is now 3-3 in A-10 play following a 2-10 record during the non-conference portion of their schedule. The Spiders will return to action Saturday at 2:30 PM against La Salle at the Robins Center. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network and heard on ESPN Richmond radio.Â
