UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For the second-consecutive game, the University of Richmond women's basketball team (7-14, 2-6 Atlantic 10) took one of the league's top teams to the brink but came up just short, falling to unbeaten Dayton (15-4, 8-0 A-10), 66-59.
Micaela Parson played one of her best games of the season, scoring 21 points to go with 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, fourth of her career and second in which she eclipsed 20 points. She also handed out four assists and collected four steals over 36 minutes.
Joining Micaela with a hot hand was Kailyn Fee who played the best game against an A-10 opponent of her young career. She dropped 19 on 7-14 shooting from the floor to go with 5-10 from long range over 27 minutes as the only other Spider to reach double figures. Alicia Hudalla and Amy Duggan each pulled down eight rebounds for the Spiders who collected 39 boards against the much taller Flyers.
The Spider defense continued its resurgence by holding the Flyers to just 47 shots from the floor and forcing 20 turnovers, 11 of which in the form of steals. Dayton was just 3-11 from long range but the difference in the game likely came at the free throw line where the Flyers were 17-23 while the Spiders managed just an 8-11 mark.
Dayton was hot from the floor in the early going, jumping out to a 9-4 lead by the 4:13 mark and led by as many as seven in the first. A Dee Hatcher jumper with 41 seconds to go in the quarter followed by a stop on the defensive end resulted in just a five-point deficit after one.
The Flyers scored first in the second quarter but Micaela responded with a personal 4-0 run to cut into Dayton's lead. Hudalla later added a jumper and Fee canned her first triple of the afternoon to tie the game at 19 with 6:21 to play in the first half. Dayton scored to retake the lead at the 5:13 mark but neither team scored again until there was 3:05 to play.
Trailing by eight with 1:18 to go, Fee buried a three ball and the Spiders locked down. Dayton missed two shots and in the closing moments Richmond forced a bad turnover to get the ball back with just over seven seconds left. Micaela took the inbound and went coast-to-coast for the score to leave Richmond with a three-point deficit at the break.
Another Fee triple tied the game at 34 with 4:04 to go in the third but that was as close as the Spiders would come. Dayton jumped out to a seven-point lead and held a five-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Richmond showed some fight in the fourth. Trailing by 13 with 5:51 to play the Spider embarked on a 15-7 run to cut it to five with 18 seconds left but the Flyers were able to make free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Spiders just endured a stretch of three consecutive games against teams ranked in the top four in the Atlantic 10. Now they will turn their attention to rival VCU for round one of the Sonabank/P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown. That game will tip off at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 28) at the Siegel Center.
