Spiders Win Fifth Straight, Move Into Second in A-10
01/28/2018 | Men's Basketball
Grant Golden dominated the paint, Nick Sherod dominated the boards, and the Spiders defense was just dominant in Richmond's 66-63 win at Davidson Sunday. Golden led all scorers with 24 points as the Spiders moved into second place in the A-10 standings with their fifth straight win.
Richmond made just one of its ten three-point attempts in the first half and shot only 40 percent from the field but held a slim one-point lead at intermission, 25-24, behind 12 points from Golden and a defense that forced nine Wildcats turnovers.
Davidson made its its first five field goal attemps after halftime to build a 36-31 lead with 15:43 remaining, but Golden and Jacob Gilyard combined to score the game's next 12 points as the Spiders raced back to take a seven-point lead into the under-12 media timeout. Davidson was able to close the gap to three points three different times down the stretch but none further as Richmond held on for its fourth straight win in the series, the Spiders longest win streak vs the Wildcats since winning the first six meetings between the schools from 1939-61.
It was the seventh time this season Golden has scored at least 20 points, more than any other Spiders freshman in at least the last 20 years. He made 11 of his 15 field goals attempts, including a pair of three-pointers. During Richmond's five-game win streak, Golden is scoring 20.8 points per game and shooting 59 percent from the field.
Sherod grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, six more than any player on either team and more than half of the Spiders total (27) for the game. The sophomore guard added 10 points for his first career double-double.
Freshman Jacob Gilyard scored nine of his 14 points after halftime, capping the Spiders critical 12-0 run in the second half with a pull-up jumper and three-pointer. He also added three steals, matching the total of the entire Davidson team, and now has 55 steals this season, one shy of the Spiders freshman record.
As a team, Richmond forced 17 turnovers, the most by Davidson in a game this season. The Spiders scored 19 points off turnovers, 13 more than the Wildcats.
The Spiders have won five straight regular-season conference games in a season for the fourth time under Chris Mooney. They'll look to stretch their win streak to six next Saturday against George Mason at the Robins Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 PM and the game will be seen on the NBC Sports Network.
