Spiders Get Right at Home with Dominant Victory Over La Salle, 77-51
01/06/2018 | Women's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (7-9, 2-1 Atlantic 10) provided every bit of the offensive firepower it showcased early in the season en route to its first home win of 2018 by rolling La Salle (5-10, 0-3 A-10), 77-51.
The Spiders were led by none other than Micaela Parson who not only scored a game-high 25 points, but handed out a career-high tying eight assists while pulling down four boards and collecting three steals in yet another stat stuffing effort. The senior has now eclipsed 20 points six times this season and has scored in double figures in every game.
Jaide Hinds-Clarke surged in the second half to finish with 13 points on 6-12 from the floor to go with four rebounds a block and a steal. Kailyn Fee joined that duo in double figures by scoring at 11 of her points in the second quarter. Alicia Hudalla added five points and six boards in another solid effort, this time off the bench to lead a unit that dropped in 34 points off the pine.
As a team the Spiders matched a season low by committing just eight turnovers while forcing La Salle into 23. That total is the third highest of any Richmond opponent this season. It's also just the sixth time all season that the Spiders have been outrebounded and it's only their second win with that stat stacked against them.
The Spiders trailed, 4-0, early. La Salle star guard/forward Amy Griffin returned after an extended absence from the lineup and found a rhythm early but the Spiders were prepared to respond. Dee Hatcher knocked in a jumper then it was Micaela Parson using some muscle to score four of the next six as Richmond embarked on a 19-2 run to close the first quarter. As the clock wound down, Alex Parson dropped in a step-back jumper at the buzzer to complete the run.
Alex added another mid-range jumper to start the second quarter that turned out to be even more efficient than the first. Kailyn Fee got into the act by scoring all 11 of her first half points in the second. She went 3-6 from long range and 4-7 overall to carry the Spiders to a 27-point lead by the 2:41 mark. La Salle was held without a field goal for over six minutes in the middle of the quarter but scored the final bucket to leave Richmond with a 25-point lead, 42-17, at the break.
Richmond shot a blistering 47.4 percent in the second quarter (9-19); part of a 44.7 percent clip in the first half (17-38) in arguably its best looking half of the season. Micaela Parson dropped in a game-high 13 points in the first half to go with four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
The second half began as strong as the first ended with Micaela scoring off a backdoor cut thanks to a nice feed from Amy Duggan. Hatcher then collected a steal and score in transition before Micaela converted inside through contact and canned a free throw to open up the Spiders' first 30-point lead of the night. The offense stayed hot and went on to shoot 47.1 percent (8-17) in the third and posted a second-straight 23-point frame to extend the lead.
The bench saw significant time in the fourth. At one point, all four freshmen were on the floor together but La Salle was never able to mount a significant comeback. In the end the Spiders ran away with a 77-51 victory at home; not only their first of 2018 but also their first of the 2017-18 season.
Richmond will take a quick trip to Philadelphia for a date with Saint Joseph's next Wednesday (Jan. 10) and will return home for Davidson on Sunday (Jan. 14). The game at Saint Joseph's will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network and is set for a Noon tip.
