Richmond Falls To Crosstown Rival VCU
10/11/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team fell behind early in a 4-1 loss against crosstown rival VCU Thursday morning at Sports Backers Stadium. Sophomore Cassidy Bennetti (Dover, Del.) scored her first career goal in the second half.
"I thought we had a great start to the game," head coach Marty Beall said. "We created numerous chances and were all over them in the first 11 minutes. We have to learn to put away our opportunities early in games because it can completely change the game. VCU finished their first opportunity and we didn't respond well enough after giving them a goal."
Richmond finished with nine shots, including five on goal in the loss. The Spiders had seven corner kicks and outscored VCU 1-0 in the second half.
In the 60th minute, senior Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Va.) took a corner kick and passed to Bennetti who blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the lower right corner. The goal for the Spiders cut the VCU lead to 4-1.
"I am proud of how we played in the second half," Beall said. "The girls never gave up, created some quality chances, but unfortunately we dug too deep of a hole to climb out of."
Junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) had a opportunity in the 82nd minute but her shot was saved by VCU's keeper Audrey Sanderson.
In the first half, Richmond controlled possession in the opening minutes earning a corner kick in the second minute. Sophomore TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) had a header shot go just high in the fourth minute off another corner kick.
Senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) took a shot on goal but Sanderson made the save. In the 12th minute, the Rams earned a corner kick and scored after Amanda Tredway found the back of the net.
VCU added their second goal in the 24th minute after Idelys Vazquez just beat Richmond's keeper Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) after a turnover by the defense.
Freshman Alyssa Hendricks (Grimes, Iowa) almost cut the lead with a shot inside the box but Sanderson made the save in the 31st minute.
The Rams pushed their lead to 3-0 after Kimberly Ito blasted a shot from outside the box into the left upper corner in the 32nd minute.
VCU scored again in the 39th minute after Megan Enos tapped in a one-timer off the pass from Stephanie Stahl to make it 4-0.
The Spiders will host George Mason for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium. UR will honor their seven seniors in Keaira Clark (Potomac, Md.), Mackenzie Cox (Stafford, Va.), Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Va.), Jenny Crowell (Sudbury, Mass.), Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.), Melanie Lippert (Saint Leonard, Md.) and Ella Stout (Minneapolis, Minn.).
