10/14/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team gave up two first-half goals falling short against George Mason, 2-0, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.
Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) came away with a season-high eight saves in the loss and made a bunch of punch outs to keep the Patriots off the scoreboard.
"I was really proud of the girls today playing with a lot of passion and heart," head coach Marty Beall said. "I love the way we responded creating chances after each goal and that is something I am very proud about. We have taken a lot of steps forward today and I am looking forward to seeing us play Dayton on Thursday night."
In the first half, George Mason took a 1-0 lead off a penalty kick from freshman Emma Van Der Vorst in the ninth minute. The Patriots were awarded a PK after a foul by Richmond inside the box.
A minute after the goal, senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) almost tied the game after a shot inside the box was turned away by Patriots keeper Morgan Symmers. Senior Mackenzie Cox (Stafford, Va.) had two chances but couldn't convert in the 11th minute.
George Mason added to its lead after an own goal by Richmond made the score 2-0 in the 35th minute. Spiders defender Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.) tried to clear the ball out of the box but headed it into the net.
Junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) made a run in the 40th minute but her shot went just wide of the net.
In the second half, Richmond continued to put pressure on George Mason finishing with four shots while holding the Patriots to just three.
Sophomore Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a couple of opportunities late in the half. Her best chance was a breakaway in the 85th minute but Symmers was able to make the save and her rebound attempt was blocked.
Richmond finished with five corner kicks, including four in the second half.
The Spiders will play Dayton in the final home game at Robins Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
