Richmond Falls On Late Goal Against Dayton, 1-0
10/18/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled all game but fell short giving up a late second-half goal to Dayton in a 1-0 loss in the home finale Thursday night at Robins Stadium.
In the 85th minute, Dayton drew a foul off a hand ball just outside the box and Jordan Pauley scored off the set piece to give the Flyers the victory.
"Tonight we went up against an organized and hardworking Dayton team," head coach Marty Beall said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't generate much on the offensive side. To give up a goal with five minutes to go was tough but I thought the girls worked hard tonight so I am proud of them. We just couldn't create any true scoring opportunities."
In a physical game from the start, both teams combined for 29 fouls with Dayton committing 17. Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) kept the Spiders in the game making five saves.
In the first half, both teams didn't generate much on the offensive side with Dayton finishing the half with five shots. Richmond's defense was able to keep the Flyers off the scoreboard thanks to strong play by the backline of freshman Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.), senior Jenny Crowell (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Mackenzie Cox (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio).
In the second half, the Spiders had an opportunity in the opening minutes after senior Bailey Cristian's (Williamsburg, Va.) corner kick found Crowell who fired a shot towards goal but Dayton keeper Kaelyn Johns made the save.
Richmond almost found the equalizer in the final minute of play after creating another corner kick but the attempt went wide.
The Spiders will finish the regular season on the road against Davidson on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m.
