The Spiders enter Saturday's game coming off a 27-24 victory at Albany for their first CAA win of the season. Senior kicker Griffin Trau (Hanover, N.H.) hit the game-winning field goal with six seconds remaining against the Great Danes. The kick marked the fourth game-winning field goal in Trau's career and the second all-time against Albany. He moved past Tim Hightower (234) for second place in Richmond Spider scoring history with 237 points in his career
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) passed for 286 yards and ran for 50 in his first collegiate win. Mancuso has notched 896 yards of total offense in his first two career stats, the most for a Richmond quarterback in consecutive games since Michael Strauss in 2013 ... Strauss accumulated 927 yards in two games against Stony Brook (360 passing, 12 rushing) and Delaware (543 passing, 12 rushing).
Wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) notched his second-straight 100-yard receiving game with nine catches for 112 yards. Senior Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.)added eight catches for 66 yards as he moved into ninth place in Richmond receiving history with 2,111 career yards.
Saturday's game marks the ninth meeting all-time between Richmond and Elon. It is the fifth-straight season that the two teams have met since the Phoenix entered the CAA in 2014. The Spiders are 7-1 all-time against Elon, having won the first seven meetings all-time before the Phoenix picked up their first win last season by a 36-33 margin. Elon scored the final 14 points in the victory at Robins Stadium in the last 9:29 of the game.
The game last year was a contrast in styles as Richmond threw for 497 yards while Elon ran for 368 yards. Simpson led the way with 10 catches for 192 yards, including a career-high 93-yard touchdown catch. Wilkins added 104 total yards of offense while Dejon Brissett (Mississauga, Ontario) scored two touchdowns. Malcolm Summers led Elon's ground attack with 294 yards rushing on 40 carries. Davis Cheek connected on 13-of-19 through the year for just 134 yards but recorded three touchdowns. The last time Richmond visited Elon was in 2016 and the Spiders recorded a 35-7 victory. Running back Deontez Thompson (Indian Head, Md.) had 116 yards on 14 carries, including a touchdown in the Spiders' victory.
Elon enters Saturday's game ranked No. 11 in the country with a 4-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in CAA play. The Phoenix had one of the biggest victories in the CAA this season when they knocked off second-ranked James Madison two weeks ago. Elon is coming off a tough loss at Delaware last weekend in which its starting quarterback, Davis Cheek, suffered a season-ending injury. Cheek and his 1,018 yards passing this season will not play against the Spiders.
Jalen Greene looks to take over at the quarterback position this week. Greene has connected on 12-of-28 passing this season for 137 yards. He has also rushed for 72 yards on 17 carries. Running back Malcolm Summers lead the CAA in rushing with 591 yards on 97 carries. He rushed 40 times last season against the Spiders, accumulating 294 yards on the ground.
