LOXLEY, Ala. – The Richmond Spiders men's golf team wrapped up its fall season Sunday with an eighth-place finish at the Steelwood Collegiate at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Alabama.
Senior Ben Wanichek shot a two-over 74 Sunday to finish the 54-hole event at 215 (-1) and place sixth on the individual leaderboard, the best tournament finish of his collegiate career.
"I'm really happy for Ben and impressed with his play for the entire fall," said head coach Adam Decker. "He has been a great leader and I'm looking forward to the spring already."
Wanicheck finished the fall with a pair of top-10 finishes in three events, matching his total number of top 10s in his first three seasons at Richmond combined.
On Sunday, the Spiders recorded a team score of 303 (+15) to finish the tournament at 887 (+23), eighth in the tightly-bunched 12-team field. A pair of Wanichek's teammates finished in the top 40 as sophomore Michael Baker tied for 31st at 222 (+6) and sophomore Andrew McInerney – playing in his first event of the season – tied for 38th at 223 (+7).
"A lot of good things came out of this fall season. Everyone got a chance to play a tournament," said Decker. "We are figuring out who we are as a team and learning a lot about playing team golf. We got into good positions during the first two rounds of most events and now we need to work on closing out the final round with better scoring. It's exciting to have a fairly young team and everyone bought into our goals."
The Spiders will open their spring season where they concluded their fall season: Alabama. Richmond is scheduled to return to the course at the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate on February 11-12 at the Magnolia Grove Country Club in Mobile.
