MOBILE, Ala. -- The Richmond Spiders are tied for seventh through two rounds at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate following standout second rounds from freshman Michael Childress and junior Zack Justice.Â
Both Childress and Justice are tied for 13th in the field of 80 after shooting identical scores of 72 (E) and 69 (-3) in the first two rounds Monday. Justice registered three birdies to no bogeys Tuesday en route to his round of 69, his lowest 18-hole score since he opened with a 66 (-6) at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship as a freshman. Childress' total of 141 (-3) is the lowest 36-hole start of his Spiders career and he'll have a chance to record his first career top-15 finish in Tuesday's third and final round.Â
"We got great play from Zack and Michael today to keep us at even par this afternoon," said coach Adam Decker. "We are in a position to make up some shots and get into the top five."
Richmond is one of four teams tied for seventh at 579 (+3). Nicholls State is in sixth place at 574 (-2) and Texas State stands in fifth at 573 (-3). Florida State is atop the leader board with a five-shot cushion at 553 (-23).Â
"Tomorrow we need to pick smart targets on approach shots and have a lot of birdie looks," said Decker. "There is weather coming in, so patience will be an important key to staying focused."
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:00 am CST.
