Richmond Earns 1-1 Double-Overtime Draw Against Rhode Island
10/04/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled adversity multiple times but was able to earn a 1-1 draw against Rhode Island Thursday night at Robins Stadium. Senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) stopped a penalty kick in overtime to seal the tie.
"Overall it was a solid performance for us, Rhode Island is a physical team and it was a good conference game," head coach Marty Beall said. "The quality of our team defending I thought was really good for the majority of the game. I am very proud of the effort after playing with 10 players and we didn't quit."
In the second half, Richmond (1-11-1, 1-3-1 A-10) was controlling possession creating multiple chances but couldn't find the back of the net. Freshman Camryn Williams (Saint Leonard, Md.) hit the crossbar on a shot in the 72nd minute and sophomore TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) had a shot on goal but Rhode Island's keeper Haley Brennan made the save. Rhode Island's first shot of the second half came on a header goal from Brooke Osmanski in the 85th minute.
The Spiders battled back with an equalizer goal in the 87th minute as senior Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Va.) found Gross who headed home her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
In overtime, with two minutes remaining sophomore Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) saved a goal by touching the ball before it went into the back of the net. Rhode Island was awarded a penalty kick but Wigg dove to her left and stopped Alexa Elworthy from ending the game.
"You never want your players to get a red card but in that situation I thought it was a smart move to give our team a shot at stopping a penalty kick," Beall said. "Wigg did what we always talk about which is read the play and she made a great save to give us a chance to get a point out of the game."
The Spiders played the rest of the first overtime and the second overtime with just 10 players coming away with a tie in 110 minutes of action. Richmond outshot the Rams 17-to-11 and had eight corner kicks.
In the first half, Richmond finished with seven shots, including five on goal but ended in a scoreless tie. The best chance came off a shot from Cristian who hit the crossbar in the 33rd minute.
Anderson had two shots and Tritt also had two shots on goal. Wigg made four saves in the first half.
The Spiders head out on the road to face George Washington on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m.
