Spiders Drop Road Contest At George Washington

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of Richmond women's soccer team fell short on the road at George Washington, 4-1, Sunday at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Senior Keaira Clark (Potomac, Md.) scored her first goal of the season off a penalty kick in the second half.
"Today was a tough match versus a very strong George Washington team," head coach Marty Beall said. "We need to learn from this match and move forward as we face another tough conference game Thursday night at VCU."
In the first half, the Colonials took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game and added a second goal to lead 2-0 at halftime. Sofia Pavon scored off a cross in the second minute and Alex Filipkowski scored in the 40th minute.
Senior Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Va.) had an opportunity in the fourth minute but her shot went just wide. Five minutes later, senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) took a shot that went wide of the net. In the 17th minute, freshman Alyssa Hendricks (Grimes, Iowa) placed a header shot from inside the box but went wide.
George Washington added to its lead in the 55th minute after Natalie Silberman scored off an assist by Sofia Pavon. The Colonials pushed the lead to 4-0 off a tipped ball from Mia Barreda in the 65th minute.
The Spiders drew a foul inside the box in the 83rd minute resulting in a penalty kick. Clark stepped up and drilled her first goal of the season to the lower right corner. Richmond fell to 1-12-1 and 1-4-1 in Atlantic 10 play with four games remaining.
Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) finished with eight saves in the loss.
The Spiders will face crosstown rival VCU on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. at SportsBackers Stadium.
