11/19/2018 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond junior defensive lineman Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning. Jackson helped the Spiders win the 129th meeting of the Capital Cup with a 10-6 victory at rival William & Mary Saturday.
Jackson led the Spiders' defense that limited William & Mary to only 212 total yards off offense, including just 59 rushing. He led the way with a team-high nine tackles in the win, including 4.5 for loss. He was a force in the second half, registering a career-high 3.0 sacks and forcing two fumbles as the Spiders' ratcheted up the pressure on the Tribe offense down the stretch.
Jackson, who is in his first year as a starter at defensive end, finished the regular season as the CAA's sack leader with 10.5 sacks on the year. It marks the second-straight season that a Spider defensive lineman has led the CAA in sacks (Andrew Clyde 2017). He is ranked sixth in NCAA FCS play in sacks, averaging 1.05 sacks per game in his 10 starts this season. His 15.5 tackles for loss on the year rank 16th in the country, also leading the league in that category.
