UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Department of Athletics hosted the annual Scholar Athlete Breakfast on Monday, November 5, at the Jepson Alumni Center.
Fifty-nine student-athletes were honored for their academic accomplishments, including the top scholars from each team and the teams with the top cumulative GPA from the 2017-18 school year.
"It's such an incredible honor to recognize so many student-athletes for their academic achievements," said Assistant Athletic Director for Academics Bruce Matthews. "It's remarkable what they're able to accomplish at an institution that challenges you both academically and athletically."
The men's cross country team continues its excellence in the classroom, earning the Men's Team Academic Award for the third straight year. The women's golf team earned the Women's Team Academic Award.
The Department of Athletics also honored four fourth-year student-athletes who performed at the top of their respective schools of study.
Redshirt junior football student-athlete Jacob Roberson was honored with the School of Arts & Sciences award, while senior Aly Fries of the women's lacrosse team earned the Robins School of Business Award. Senior soccer student-athlete Ashley Gross was given the Jepson School of Leadership Studies Award.
The biggest honor of the day was awarded to senior cross country and track & field runner Colleen Carney, who was named the Scholar Athlete of the Year. Carney is completing her dual degree in Leadership Studies and Healthcare Studies.
