UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Several student-athletes participated in Geography Awareness Week by attending the Department of Geography and the Environment's GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day last week. Geography Awareness Week is a geographic literacy initiative sponsored by the National Geographic Society. GIS Day is a global event that enables GIS users to showcase the real-world applications of GIS to schools, businesses and the general public. The University of Richmond's GIS day was centered around a presentation on the Kenya Settlement Scheme Project, with Dr. Sandra Joireman, Associate Provost at The University of Richmond; Paddy Maken, Sheila Claron and Maureen Jerono from the National Lands Commission in Kenya.
Men's basketball freshmen Jake Wojik (San Jose, Calif.), Matt Grace (Hamilton, Ontario) and Sal Koureissi (Harlem, N.Y.) attended the presentation and greeted the presenters who spent three weeks here. The presenters worked in the University's Spatial Analysis Lab working to update the settlement schemes in Kenya with the hopes of utilizing the database to answer critical questions relating to economic development, political activity and the well-being in Kenya.
On Tuesday of last week, the Director of the Spatial Analysis Lab, Professor Kimberley Browne, as well as guests from Kenya and two University of Richmond students originally from Kenya, visited The Robins Center for lunch, a tour of the facilities and to engage with student-athletes currently enrolled in Geography, Environmental Studies or GIS related courses. Student-athletes Kelsey Hengerer (Barna, County Galway, Ireland), Gersham Ejoni (Wake Forest, N.C.), Grace and Andre Gustavson (Helsinki, Finland) learned a great deal from the guests in regards to the projects they are working on which aid in the education and technological advancements of their respective towns in Kenya. One of note, is the library University of Richmond junior Mike Kitimet created in Kiserian, Kenya with funds received from a Project for Peace grant.
It is the hope that these interactions with others from around the world will assist in broadening the insights and global perspectives of Spider student-athletes. Creating connections, in these ways, will only aid in developing their future involvement on both a global and local level.
