12/14/2018 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team is celebrating their 100th season during the 2018-19 campaign. Teammates, 1,000-point scorers, Hall of Famers and two of the greatest players in school history Karen Elsner & Jackie Isreal Thomas.
Karen Elsner – Class of 1991-92 (First-ever female scholarship athlete)
Elsner holds numerous records at Richmond, most notably still claiming the title of the program's all-time leading scorer (2,367 points) and rebounder (1,244 rebounds). Elsner attended the University of Richmond from 1981-85 and was inducted into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992. Elsner still holds 13 individual records.
Elsner boasts records for most points in a game (39), season (646) and career (2,367). Elsner also ranks first for rebounds in a game (23), season (347) and career (1,244). Elsner still holds the highest scoring average during a four-year career at 21.5 ppg. Elsner was recognized for her distinguished career in a banner-raising ceremony at the Robins Center in 2009.
Elsner was a two-time captain that amassed a 64-48 record during her four years a Spider. Elsner was a member of the 1982 VAIAW II State Champion team.
Jackie Isreal Thomas – Class of 2013-14
Jackie Isreal made her presence known at both ends of the court during her four-year career on the Spider women's basketball team. Offensively, she scored 1,067 points, good for 21st on the all-time Spider scoring list. But it is at the defensive end of the court where Jackie left her legacy. Her record 10 steals in a game against Georgetown in 1984 is still the most ever by a Spider women's basketball player and she has four of the top eight marks for steals in a game. In her four seasons, she finished 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th for steals in a season. She is second on the school's all-time steals list with 289.
During her freshman season, the Spiders went 22-8 and captured the VAIAW State Championship. She went on to be part of three winning teams during her four years. Along with Hall of Famer Karen Elsner, Jackie was selected captain for her senior season in 1984-85.
The University of Richmond will host a 100-year celebration for all fans, alumni and former players in their game against LaSalle on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
