12/19/2018 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders were unable to stop Old Dominion's senior guard duo of B.J. Stith and Ahmad Caver when it counted Wednesday night as the Monarchs roared back from a late eight-point deficit to beat Richmond 63-54 at the Robins Center.
Richmond led 48-40 with eight-and-half minutes left to play before Old Dominion closed the game on a 23-6 run, with Stith and Caver combining for 21 of the Monarchs points during that stretch.
Stith led all players with 30 points, while Grant Golden scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Spiders, his ninth career double-double.
Old Dominion led by as many as eight in the first half, but a 16-4 scoring run by the Spiders gave Richmond a 33-28 edge at halftime. Golden started the run with two straight layups, part of his 13 first-half points, and Nathan Cayo finished it with a lay-in that just beat the first-half buzzer.
After both offenses struggled over the first half of the final period, the Spiders took a seven-point lead when Jake Wojcik drained a three-pointer to make it 47-40 with 9:14 to play. After a Jacob Gilyard free throw increased the margin to 48-40, the Monarchs responded with eight straight to tie the game.
Richmond retook the lead at the five-minute mark when a Grant Golden jumper made it 52-50 Spiders, but Stith scored nine straight points on his own to make it 59-52 with less than two minutes remaining.
Richmond struggled to convert near the basket late, and shot just 26 percent from the field after halftime after hitting on 48 percent of their shots in the opening period.
Golden's 11 rebounds tied a career high as he registered the 16th 20-point game of his career. Cayo was the only other Spider to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
The Spiders return to action on Saturday, December 22, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face High Point in the Holiday Hoops Fest held at the St. Elizabeths East Entertainment & Sports Arena. Tip-off between the Spiders and Panthers is set for 2:30 p.m.
