12/31/2018 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore forward Grant Golden was named Co-Player of the Week and freshman guard Jake Wojcik was named Co-Rookie of the Week in the Atlantic 10, the conference announced Monday.
Golden shared the Player of the Week Award with Dayton's Josh Cunningham while Wojcik shared the Rookie of the Week Award with Dayton's Obi Tobbin. It is the first time the Spiders have won at least a share of both weekly awards since January 28, 2018, when Golden was named the conference's Rookie of the Week and Nick Sherod was the Co-Player of the Week.
Golden and Wojcik led the Spiders offense in Richmond's 91-82 win at South Alabama on Saturday as the Spiders scored their second-most points in a road game over the last three seasons.
Golden totaled 22 points, tied for the team high, and eight rebounds while adding a career-high six assists and two blocks. He made eight of his 14 field goal attempts and was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Golden also earned the A-10's Co-Player of the Week Award last week following strong performances against Old Dominion and High Point. He is the first player to be named A-10 Player of the Week in consecutive weeks since Jaylen Adams of St. Bonaventure did it last season (December 26 and January 2). Golden joins Davidson's Kellan Grady as the only players to win Player of the Week from the conference twice this season,.
Wojcik scored a career-high 22 points -- tied with Golden for the most on the team -- on Saturday and matched his career high with eight rebounds. He made six of his 11 shots from the field including five of nine from three-point range. He also added a block, a steal, and a pair of assists while committing no turnovers against South Alabama's full-court press.
Wojcik, Golden, and the rest of the Spiders will take on Dayton on Sunday in a matchup of this week's Co-Players of the Week and Co-Rookies of the Week in the Atlantic 10. Tip time is noon eastern and the game will be broadcast national on the NBC Sports Network.
