11 different Spiders score as Richmond uses entire bench
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's basketball team jumped out to a decisive 29-6 lead 10 minutes into the game Wednesday night and didn't look back on its way to an 82-47 win over visiting Coppin State at the Robins Center.
The 47 points were the fewest allowed by the Spiders since a 74-44 win over Presbyterian in 2015. Richmond held the Eagles to just 34-percent shooting (18-53) from the field, and 12.5 percent (2-16) from behind the arc.
Grant Golden scored seven of the game's opening 10 points, as the Spiders held the Eagles scoreless for over three minutes to start the game. Just minutes later, back-to-back 3-pointers from Jacob Gilyard forced Coppin State to take a timeout.
The lead ballooned to 25-6 after Noah Yates and Jake Wojcik each hit 3-pointers of their own heading into the under-12 minute timeout. The Spiders kept up the offensive pressure, taking a 27-point lead into the locker room after Bryce Schneider scored his first career points on a tip-in at the halftime buzzer.
Julius Johnson opened the second half with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 30 and many of the Spiders regulars headed to the bench shorty thereafter as Coach Mooney used all 14 available players.
Gilyard led all scorers with 14 points, while Golden (13), Gustavson (12) and Koureissi (10) also finished in double figures. Golden logged his third double-double of the season, tying a career high with 11 rebounds. Gilyard also finished with five assists, and has had at least that many in each of his seven games this season. Nineteen of the Spiders' 30 field goals were assisted on the night.
The Spiders will have some time off from competition during finals week before returning to the Robins Center on Saturday, December 15, for a matchup with Oral Roberts. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
