Sherod, Golden Combine For 50 In Loss At St. Bonaventure
02/10/2018 | Men's Basketball
OLEAN, N.Y. - Nick Sherod scored a game-high 26 points and Grant Golden tied a career-high with 11 field goals but the Spiders (9-15, 7-5) fell to St. Bonaventure (18-6, 8-4) on the road Saturday. Sherod and Golden were joined by Khwan Fore, who scored a season-high 16 points, and Jacob Gilyard (14) in double figures, but a late run spearheaded by preseason first-team All-A-10 selection Jaylen Adams helped the Bonnies to a 97-88 win.
Jacob Gilyard's steal and layup with 4:59 remaining in the first half put Richmond up 40-39, the Spiders first lead since the game's first few minutes. But the Bonnies closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 51-42 lead at intermission.
The Spiders exploded out of the break, scoring nine straight points to tie the game at 51 on another steal and layup with Jacob Gilyard two minutes into the second half. The teams traded baskets until the midway point of the second half, with neither opening up a lead of more than three points. Then, Adams, who was coming off a pair of 40-point performances in his last two games, scored 10 straight points and Matt Mobley, also a preseason first-team All-A-10 selection, hit his fifth three-pointer of the game to give the Bonnies a 72-61 lead with 9:11 remaining.
Richmond got within five of St. Bonaventure down the stretch but the Bonnies held on for their second win in their last six meetings with the Spiders. Playing on Homecoming in front of a sellout crowd, the Bonnies won their 10th straight home game to pull into a tie for second place in the A-10.
It was Golden's team-high eighth 20-point game of the season, the most by a Spiders freshman in at least 20 years. Sherod led Richmond with nine rebounds, coming just shy of his third double-double in his last four games.
Jacob Gilyard led the Spiders in both assists (six) and steals (five). The freshman now has 68 steals this season, tied with Tony Dobbins in 2002-03 for the fifth-most in a season in Spiders history.
De'Monte Buckingham, Richmond's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer, missed the game while continuing his recovery from the dehydration and leg cramps that forced him from Wednesday's win vs VCU. Freshman Nate Cayo made his second career start in Buckingham's place and finished a career-best seven rebounds in 34 minutes.
With the loss, Richmond falls to fourth in the A-10 standings at 7-5. The Spiders will head to conference leaders Rhode Island Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM and the game will be seen on CBS Sports Network.
