MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Richmond men's golf team began its spring season this week at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course against some of the nations top competition and fared well, finishing in a tie for seventh among the 16 squads.
Despite playing out of the No. 5 spot, Andrew Sciarretta's star shone brightest this week. He posted an Even par 216 and did so by improving his score with each passing round. He began the week with a +2, 74 then followed that up with a +1, 73 before closing with a -3, 69, marking the fifth under-par round from a Spider this season. His score was good enough to finish in a tie for 12th overall.
Behind Sciarretta was Matthew Lowe who posted a +5, 221 to finish in a tie for 35th overall. Matt rolled out back-to-back 73's before closing with a 75 from the top spot. Ben Wanichek tied for 43rd overall with scores of 78, 72 and 73 to mark a +7, 223 and freshman Michael Baker rounded out the scoring lineup with a +9, 225 to finish in a tie for 50th.
With daylight waning the Spiders were only able to finish one round of play and part of the second on day one. The team posted a score of +12, 300 in round one but improved heavily in round two by rolling out a +3, 291. On the strength of Sciarretta's 69 the Spiders closed out the event with a +5, 293 to finish the event at 884 which is tied for the best tournament score for the team this season.
The next event on tap for Richmond will be The Schenkel, held at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga. That tournament will span three days, much like the Atlantic 10 Championship does, March 16-18.
