ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (11-15, 6-7 Atlantic 10) got rolling early and never looked back on Wednesday night at St. Bonaventure (7-19, 2-11 A-10), leading the game by as many as 25 at one point to run away with the 79-57 road victory.
The Parson sisters were at it again. Micaela Parson dropped a game-high 24, 17 of which came in the first half, on 9-14 shooting to go with a pair of assists and a pair of steals. Alex Parson continued her resurgence with 14 points off the bench, marking the 16th time this season the Parson sisters have both reached double figures.
Kylie Murphree added seven points and seven assists, Kailyn Fee went for 10 points and a career-high three rebounds and Alicia Hudalla added a season-high nine points on 3-3 from long range; all of this while shooting a season-best 50.8 percent from the floor as a team.
On the defensive end, the Spiders forced 25 turnovers marking the fourth time this season that Richmond has forced 20 or more of the kind. Those turnovers turned into 33 points on the other end, also a season-high.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with both teams knocking down shots in the early going. With the score tied, 16-16, in the closing moments, Micaela went coast-to-coast to score at the buzzer with an acrobatic layup to push the Spiders after by two after one.
The second quarter was a shooting clinic put on by UR. The Spiders went 9-13 from the floor, (69.2 percent), 4-6 from long range and 4-4 at the free throw line paced by nine points from Micaela. The lead went from two to 16 by the 3:10 mark in the quarter and there was little doubt left in this one the rest of the way.
Richmond took a 16-point lead into the locker room and pushed it to 21 by the end of the third despite a mini-run from SBU in the middle of the frame. The Bonnies provided little resistance in the fourth as the Spiders were able to coast to the 22-point victory.
The Spiders return home this weekend for round two of the Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown with rival VCU. The game is set to tip at 3:00 p.m. and will air on CBS 6.3. Sunday's will also serve as Senior Day of the four graduating student-athletes in Richmond's program.
