Spiders Shut Down George Washington, 49-36, Secure Home Game in A-10 Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (13-16, 8-8 Atlantic 10) put forth its best defensive effort of the season against one of the league's hottest teams in George Washington (15-13, 10-6 A-10) and came away with a, 49-36, victory in the regular season finale, clinching a home game to open the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Micaela Parson, as she has been all season, was the catalyst on Saturday afternoon, dropping 19 points, 15 the second half, to lead all scorers. She was 9-18 from the floor to go with five rebounds, two assists and three steals in 36 minutes. She completed the regular season having scored in double figures in all 29 games with an average of 18.2 per game.
Jaide Hinds-Clarke joined Micaela in double figures, her seventh such effort this season, and pulled down a season-high nine boards coupled with two steals. Alex Parson tossed in nine points off the bench and Kailyn Fee canned a pair of triples to move into move into a tie for eighth-most three balls in a single season in program history.
Despite scoring just 49 points for the second-straight game, the Spiders managed to shoot 39 percent from the floor while holding the Colonials to 31 percent from the floor and 18 percent (3-17) from deep. The 36 points are the fewest by a Richmond opponent this season.
Richmond quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead by the seven-minute mark, forcing George Washington into an early timeout to regroup. The lead grew to eight when Fee dropped in her first triple of the afternoon and stayed there when Micaela flipped in a runner at the buzzer to leave Richmond with a 16-8 advantage at the first break.
The home side made its first push in the second quarter, holding the Spiders to just five, second-quarter, points. Richmond responded defensively to keep things close, holding the Colonials to nine points in the frame to take a 21-17 lead into halftime.
GW hit a three ball on its first possession of the third quarter but that was the last field goal for the home side for the rest of the frame. The Richmond defense held George Washington without a field goal over the final 9:45 of the third quarter and built a 10-point advantage with an Alex Parson, 19-footer, at the buzzer.
Micaela and Jaide trade buckets early in the fourth to push the Spider lead to 14, their largest of the game and traded buckets with the Colonials for a few minutes before a Micaela split the defense and scored in the lane at the 4:27 mark to force George Washington into another timeout. She was fouled on the play and made the free throw on the other side of the timeout to give Richmond a commanding 14-point lead at that stage. The Spider defense did not relent and the game was sealed with an Alex Parson deep ball that banked home with 33 seconds to play. GW has no answer and the Spiders secured the 13-point victory.
