BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team dropped its spring break opener on Monday morning, falling at Florida Atlantic, 4-2.
"It's been nice to get in plenty of practice time while in Florida," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "We've been able to get used to the sun and win after playing indoors, which should help prepare us for the rest of the season."
The two teams began with singles action. Sophomores Kiana Marshall and Lea Owens got the Spiders on the board with wins on courts 3 and 4. Marshall posted a three-set comeback win on court 3, defeating FAU's Gillis 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Owens defeated Thoms on court 4, 6-4, 6-3.
"Kiana and Lea both fought hard for their matches today," Wesselink added. "This was an important match for us to get back outside, and it's nice to see their success."
Despite the two wins, the Owls were able to win on the remaining courts to take the 4-2 victory. Doubles play was stopped because of inclement weather.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Fort Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
