Spiders Collect Second-Place Finish at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's golf team competed at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate this week and came away with a second-place finish after firing scores of 331-325-317, 973 (+109) while also besting two other Patriot League opponents that participated in the event.
The Spiders were led by freshman Lizzie Reedy who added another top-five finish to her ledger after picking up her first back in the fall. She fired tallies of 77-85-79, 241 (+25) to close in a tie for fifth and just 11 strokes out of the top spot. Also joining Lizzie near the top of the leaderboard was Sophie DiPetrillo who picked up her fifth top 10 of the season with a 242 (+26); good for seventh overall. Annie Collom, 244 (+28) finished in a tie for eighth to earn her third top 10 of the season.
"This was a great tournament to play over spring break to challenge ourselves and prepare for the second half of our spring season," head coach Ali Wright said. "I am proud of how our team handled playing in some adverse conditions and for finishing in second place."
Elsa Diaz, 247 (+31), closed her week in a tie for 13th overall to round out the scoring lineup for the Spiders. Freshman Ally Steffen posted her best individual finish so far this year by closing in 24th.
The Spiders started slow, settling into third place after posting an opening round 331 and falling in behind Patriot League rival Boston University who posted a 323. Eastern Kentucky, which went on to win the event, jumped ahead early with a 315 and never looked back.
Richmond erased that eight-stroke deficit and then-some in extreme weather conditions by the end of round two. Elsa Diaz was the lone Spider to post a round south of 80, firing a 79, en route to the team actually improving its total score by six to post a 325 while every other team backed up.
The Spiders improved once again on Friday, rolling out a 317 and putting Boston in the rearview to secure its stranglehold at the top of the Patriot League standings.
No rest is coming for Richmond following this event. The team will head to Williamsburg, Va. for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate against a loaded field looking to build on this weeks work. That 54-hole event will be held across Monday (Mar. 19) and Tuesday (Mar. 20). The first 36 holes will take place on Monday with the final round being contested on Tuesday morning.
