WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's golf team, in the wake of Andrew Sciarretta earning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and following a dinner at which the team received its 2017 A-10 Championship rings, put forth its best effort of the spring season, placing fourth at the Seahawk Intercollegiate amongst a strong field.
Â
The Spiders fired a team score of 881 (+17), finishing just two strokes back of Golfstat ranking No. 53 Michigan State (+15, 879). No. 67 UNCW (-2, 862) took the title with No. 62 Campbell (+10, 874) finishing second. Richmond topped the only other Top 75 program in the field in No. 64 Miami (Ohio) (+21, 885).
In the opening round the Spiders fired a 292 (+4) to settle into a tie for fifth. Both Matthew Lowe and Andrew Sciarretta rolled out scores of 71 (-1) with freshman Michael Baker not far back with an opening round 73 (+1). Only Michigan State (283), UNCW (289), and Boston College (290) and Campbell (291) were better after the first round.
The Spiders took a slight step back with a second round score of 298 (+10) but responded with their second-best score of the 2017-18 season with a final round outing of 291 (+3) to move into sole-possession of fourth-place. That 291 was the best team score of any in the 14-team field. Lowe fired with a final round 70 (-2) to lead the team and come away with a sixth-place finish (71-76-70, 217).
Andrew Sciarretta and Ben Wanichek both came away with scores of 221 (+5) to tie for 12th overall. Wanichek fired the best score of his career in the form of a -2, 70 in the second round.
The Spiders bested fellow A-10 teams Davidson (+34), VCU (+38) and George Mason (+61) with just one event left to play before the team attempts to defend it's A-10 title at Grand Cypress in Orlando at the end of April.
