Women's Basketball Adds Transfer Kaila Clark

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head women's basketball coach Michael Shafer announced on Thursday afternoon the addition of forward Kaila Clark, who will be transferring into the program after two seasons Navy. After sitting out next season, she will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Clark, who leaves Navy ranking second all-time in blocked shots (128), brings size and experience to a Spider roster that graduates four heavily contributing seniors. She scored over 400 points, grabbed 445 rebounds in two seasons. During her sophomore campaign, she finished third on the team with 7.8 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game and 69 blocks. She shot 42.5 percent from the floor and 68.3 percent from the free throw line while starting in all 33 games and averaging 25.5 minutes per game.
"We are excited to add someone of Kaila's experience to our program," head coach Michael Shafer said. "She is an incredibly athletic forward who can go get the ball out of her area. Â After she sits for the transfer year, we believe she can immediately provide a boost as a rebounder and defensive player, as she can block shots. Her scoring and her range have improved since she entered college, and we will continue to work to develop that facet of her game during the transition year. Kaila is of incredibly high character and accustomed to hard work. Â She truly wants to be a better player while pursuing a degree focusing on pre-health. Â We believe she will be a tremendous asset to our program, even during the year that she sits out. Â We are looking for great things from her during the remaining two years of her career."
Â
During her freshman season, she recorded 59 blocks on the season, second most by a Navy freshman, but also 13th in school history for career blocks. She ranked sixth among freshmen nationally (tied for 65th overall) with her 1.74 blocks-per-game average, which also ranked second in the Patriot League among all players. She recorded multiple blocks in 19 games, made the first start of her career at George Mason and recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals. That effort earned her the Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week accolade on Dec. 27. She played a season-high 38 minutes in Navy's WNIT first round overtime victory over George Washington while posting eight points (4-8 shooting), five rebounds and four blocks. She shot at least 50% from the field in 12 games.
Â
A native of Hughesville, Md., Kaila graduated from Archbishop Spalding High School where she earned four letters in basketball and one in track and field. She earned all-conference accolades as a senior and was tabbed as the team captain and MVP of the team that season.
Â
Kaila's father played basketball at Drexel, mother played basketball at Radford and sister played hoops at Adelphi. Her cousin, Jordan Sugars, graduated from Navy in 2012 and was a four-year member of the basketball team.
Â
Kaila will be one of seven new additions to the women's basketball program next season, joining the six incoming freshmen from the signing class.Â
