UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Andre Gustavson of Finland's Helsinki Basketball Academy has signed with the Spiders and will attend the University of Richmond this fall. Gustavson (GUSS-tahv-son) is expected to be eligible for the 2018-19 season as part of Richmond's freshman class.
A 6'4" guard, Gustavson led Finland's team at the 2017 FIBA U18 European Championships, averaging 12.7 points over seven games. Against Greece in a group stage game, Gustavson scored a game-high 27 points, tied for fourth-most by any player in the tournament.Â
Gustavson helped Helsinki Basketball Academy to the regular-season title in the Finnish 1st Division in 2017-18, scoring 11.4 points per game while shooting better than 54 percent from the field. Helsinki Basketball Academy is also the alma mater of current Chicago Bulls rookie Lauri Markkanen, a sharpshooter who set an NBA record this season by reaching 100 career three-pointers faster than any other player in league history.Â
Gustavson had drawn interest from several schools since he announced last year that he was interested in playing collegiately in the United States, including Davidson. Gustavson will be the third international player on the Spiders roster. Nathan Cayo is from Montreal, Canada and Tomas Verbinskis is a native of Klaipeda, Lithuania, who played at Florida's Sagemont School before coming to Richmond.Â
