Spiders Knock Off Rams in 13 Inning Series Opener
05/04/2018 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – It certainly was a crosstown showdown in the series opener of the Richmond-VCU series Friday night at The Diamond. It had to be decided in extra innings, but it was the Spiders who got hot and plated a pair for the 4-2 victory.
The Rams (28-18, 11-8) threatened in the bottom of the sixth with runners in scoring position, but the Spiders (23-19, 9-7) turned a double play to end the threat and keep the game locked at 0-0. VCU broke through the zeros on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Tyler Plantier broke up VCU's no-hit bid with a double down the left field line. Plantier drove in Sage Bruhl, who led off the inning with a walk, cutting the Rams' lead to one, 2-1. Richmond continued to battle in the inning as Plantier scored on an error to tie the game back up at 2-2.
Layne Looney took the hill in the bottom of the eighth and shut down the Rams in order sending the game to the ninth in a 2-2 lock. In the ninth, the Spiders threatened with three hits, but two runners were left stranded. The bottom of the ninth was a repeat of the eighth where Looney sent the Rams down in order, sending the game to extras.
In the top of the 13th, Justin Cook led off the inning with a single and scored after D.J. Lee laid down a perfectly placed bunt to give Richmond a 3-2 advantage. Vinny Capra laced a double down the left field line to drive in Lee and add an insurance run for the Spiders, 4-2. Dalton Light made it a quick inning in the bottom half of the 13th to secure Richmond's win in the opener.
The series is set to resume tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
