Checking In At New York Giants Minicamp With Spider Greats Lauletta & Wynn
06/20/2018 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football program was well represented at New York Giants minicamp last week in East Rutherford, N.J., as former Spider quarterback Kyle Lauletta and defensive lineman Kerry Wynn took part in the three-day mandatory event at the Quest Diagnostics Training Facility.
Lauletta is in his first year with the Giants after being selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft with the 108th overall pick. His fourth round selection (108th overall) is the highest selection for a Spider since Barry Redden was chosen 14th overall in the first round of the 1982 draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
Lauletta becomes the sixth Richmond quarterback drafted into the NFL since 1941 and the first since 1975. That season, Harry Knight was chosen in the ninth round by the Oakland Raiders. Lauletta's fourth round selection marks the highest a Spider quarterback has gone in the NFL Draft.
Lauletta is the third FCS quarterback taken in the top four rounds since 2014, joining the likes of Carson Wentz (2016, 1st) and Jimmy Garoppolo (2014, 2nd). He is the first quarterback taken out of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) since 2008 when Joe Flacco was picked with the 18th overall pick by the Baltimore Ravens. Lauletta finished his Richmond career as the all-time leading passer and just the fourth quarterback in CAA history to reach the 10,000-yard career mark, finishing with 10,422 yards. He set the Richmond single-season record for total offense with 3,827 yards and was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Year.
Wynn enters his fourth season with the New York Giants and has played in 49 games in his career. Over the past three seasons, he has played at least 14 games and combined for over 100 total tackles.
Wynn was a member of the Richmond football program from 2009-13, appearing in 32 career games for the Spiders. In his senior season, he was a Second-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selections, posting 56 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He also earned All-CAA honors as a junior when he led Richmond with 4.5 sacks and posted 45 tackles on the year.
The New York Giants will open training camp when rookies, selected veterans, and the quarterbacks – including 15-year pro Eli Manning – will begin camp on July 22. The rest of the team will report on Wednesday, July 25, or 15 days before the preseason opener vs. Cleveland.
