Football Places Four On Preseason All-CAA Team
07/24/2018 | Football
BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Richmond placed four student-athletes on the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association Team, the league office announced Tuesday at its annual media day held at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The preseason team is selected by the 12 head coaches and media relations directors in the CAA.
The Spiders' four selections were third-most in the CAA and included senior defensive lineman Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas), senior wide receiver Dejon Brissett (Mississauga, Ontario), senior offensive lineman John Yarbrough (Homewood, Ala.) and senior kicker Griffin Trau (Culver, Ind.). Defending champion James Madison led the way with six preseason selections while Delaware had five selections.
Clyde has already been named preseason All-America by multiple publications this season. He earned Third Team All-America honors last season by STATS FCS and was a First Team All-CAA selection. He led the CAA in sacks, totaling 9.0 on the season. He led a defense that set a school-record with 3.2 sacks per game (36 on the year). He recorded 41 total
tackles, 11 of which were for a loss, while leading the team with seven QB hurries.
Brissett finished first on the team with 63 receptions and was second on the team with 896 yards. He tied for the team lead with seven touchdowns, ranking 37th in the nation in that category. He recorded four 100-yard games and was 25th in the nation with 5.7 receptions per game.
Yarbrough earned Third Team All-CAA honors last season. He has made 18-straight starts for the Spiders and anchored a line last year that allowed just 23.0 sacks, fourth best in the CAA.
Trau was a First Team All-CAA selection last season and has earned All-America honors as a sophomore. Last year, he finished first in the CAA and 15th in the nation converting 80 percent of his field goal attempts (12-of-15). For his career, Trau is 35-of-41 (.854), scoring 192 points.
New Hampshire quarterback Trevor Knight was named the CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while James Madison cornerback Rashad Robinson was selected as the CAA Preseason Defensive Player of the year.
The CAA also announced the preseason poll for the highly competitive league and the Richmond Spiders were slated to finish seventh in the poll. The last time Richmond was picked seventh or lower was in the 2012 season when the Spiders were picked to finish ninth and ended the year tied for first and ranked No. 18 in the country. Defending champion James Madison was the overwhelming favorite followed by New Hampshire, Delaware, Stony Brook, Elon and Villanova before the Spiders. The top seven teams in the CAA have all been ranked in various preseason polls this year, the most by any conference in the country.
