RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond athletic department has broken ground at Independence Golf Club for a new practice facility for Spider men's and women's golf. The coaches' offices and team lounge will be completed in early fall while the entire practice facility will be done in late October with weather permitting.
"This is a very exciting time for the Richmond men's and women's golf programs," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "This new team facility further enhances our great partnership with Independence as the home of Spider golf. The facility will improve our Spider student-athletes' experience and training year-round; and will have a positive impact on our entire varsity golf program."
The facility at Independence Golf Club will include an indoor hitting facility, coaches' offices and team lounges. This important enhancement will elevate the Richmond golf programs and provide our student-athletes with first-rate facilities to train year-round.
"We are fortunate to play at Independence Golf Course, and having an indoor practice facility on-site will give our student-athletes a sense of a home year round," women's golf head coach Ali Wright said. "It's an exciting time for Spider golf and this building will significantly enhance our student-athletes experience and help our student-athletes reach new levels of skill development, especially during inclement weather. Additionally, this building will allow us to showcase the best of what we the University of Richmond has to offer to recruits."
Independence Golf Club has been the home for Spider men's and women's golf since the 2014-15 season. The Spiders enjoy top-of-the-line amenities, including a range, a short game area including sand traps and chipping, as well as a nine-hole par-3 short course and an 18-hole championship course.
"We are really excited to see the vision of a complete practice facility coming to life out at Independence Golf Club," men's fold coach Adam Decker said. "From a facilities standpoint, we will have a great package to show recruits now. Winter and early spring are great times to address the technical issues of our player's games. This facility will allow that to happen regardless of the weather conditions outside. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful commitment from our alumni, boosters and administration to get this facility completed. It sends a clear signal to golf prospects that we are serious about this program and want you to have every opportunity to compete at a high level."
