Women’s Soccer Begins Marty Beall Era With First Practice
08/01/2018 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer program begins a new era with their first practice under first-year head coach Marty Beall on Wednesday, August 1.
Beall is just the second coach in school history as the Spiders will begin their 23rd season of competition when they face Furman on the road on August 17. Beall brings a winning mentality after nine seasons at High Point leaving with the school record for most wins at 95 and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Richmond is eager for a fresh start after showing progress in the spring season and will lean on its upperclassmen for leadership. Seniors Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.), Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Va.) and Mackenzie Cox (Stafford, Va.) were named captains for the 2018 campaign.
"My expectations for this year are to build a strong foundation around our three core values (love each other, have positive actions and relentless dedication to becoming the best version of you that you can be)," coach Beall said. "Everything we do we revolve around those three core values. I will view success for this year as developing a growth mindset in our players. We want our players constantly striving to learn and grow, both as people and as players. If we keep our focus on these things, winning will take care of itself."
The team has 12 upperclassmen returning, including junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) who scored two goals last season. Beam played in all 17 games and had 18 shots.
"Each player has a valuable role on this team and none of the roles are more important than another role," coach Beall said. "We have three amazing captains, but their leadership alone won't be enough. We need each person to lead and that leadership first starts with leading themselves which will then allow them to help each other."
10 newcomers will be vying for playing time, including two sophomore transfers in TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) and Olivia Melnyk (Basking Ridge, NJ). Richmond will have 16 days, two exhibitions against Drexel (Aug. 7) and Maryland (Aug. 11), to prepare for the regular season opener on the road at Furman.
"I think the team's biggest strength this fall is the desire to put Richmond women's soccer in the A-10 tournament and to earn respect from their peers," coach Beall said. "From day one of my arrival in January, I can see it in everything they do and they truly want to build this program into one that the university, alumni, and fans are proud of. I can't wait to help them do that."
