Spiders face 12 postseason teams from last season
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team announced its entire schedule on Tuesday for the program's 100th season in 2018-19. The 29-game schedule starts with Georgetown at the Robins Center and is highlighted by road games against ACC foe Wake Forest, 2018 NCAA Tournament participant Quinnipiac and in-state rival William & Mary.
"We are excited about the overall schedule," head coach Michael Shafer said. "As usual, it is going to be a challenging schedule. We tried to build a good mixture of challenging opportunities, teams with different styles of plays and conferences so that we are adequately prepared to have success in A-10 play. I believe we have done that this season as well. We will compete against several postseason teams before we reach our always competitive A-10 schedule."
Richmond's schedule will be competitive with 12 games against teams reaching postseason play (NCAA or WNIT) from a season ago. Quinnipiac has been to the postseason in seven straight seasons, including a win against Miami in the NCAA Tournament last season. Virginia Tech lost in the WNIT championship and went 23-14 in 2017-18. Other postseason teams the Spiders will face are Drexel (WNIT), UCF (WNIT), Georgetown (WNIT), George Washington (NCAA), Dayton (NCAA), Duquesne (WNIT), Fordham (WNIT), Saint Joseph's (WNIT), George Mason (WNIT) and Saint Louis (WNIT).
The Spiders will open the season with a home game against Big East member Georgetown on Nov. 6 and will take part in a thanksgiving tournament in Orlando, Florida on Nov. 24-25. The tournament will be hosted by UCF (22-11) with two other 20-win teams from 2017-18 in Virginia Tech (23-14) and Villanova (23-9).
There are seven home games on tap during the non-conference season. In addition to Georgetown, Richmond will face Fairfield (Nov. 9), Maryland-Eastern Shore (Nov. 14), Howard (Dec. 8), Ohio (Dec. 22), Drexel (Dec. 29) and UNCG on Jan. 2 to complete the non-conference slate.
One other road trip will send Richmond to Boca Raton, Florida to face FAU on Nov. 18, the first of two Florida trips for UR. The Spiders hold a 2-0 record against the Owls.
"We have a very young and new team, so we are hopeful that these non-conference games will help us develop some experience while helping us build some confidence," Shafer said. "Our non-conference schedule is not easy, as we are always scheduling for possible postseason opportunities. As competitors, this type of schedule should be very exciting and rewarding."
Richmond will begin the 16-game Atlantic 10 conference slate with a home game against Rhode Island on Jan. 5 inside the Robins Center. The Spiders will play seven games in January, including four road games at Fordham (Jan. 9), at Davidson (Jan. 16), at Duquesne (Jan. 19) and at La Salle (Jan. 26).
The 81st meeting against cross-town rival VCU will be at the Robins Center on Jan. 12 sponsored by Sonabank/P.O.W.E.R. The two teams have combined to split games sitting with a 40-40 record dating back to 1941.
The Spiders will host Saint Joseph's on Jan. 23 and will have four home A-10 games in February against UMass (Feb. 3), St. Bonaventure (Feb. 13), George Mason (Feb. 21) and La Salle (Feb. 24). Richmond will play VCU, La Salle and UMass twice this season.
Four road games in February begin with at Dayton (Feb. 6), at VCU (Feb. 9), at Saint Louis (Feb. 17 on NBCSN) and at UMass (Feb. 27). The regular season will conclude with a home game against George Washington on March 2.
The 2019 A-10 Championship hosted by Duquesne will be March 8-10, 2019, with the first round being held on Tuesday, March 5. The first-round games as well as the championship quarterfinals will be available live on ESPN+, while the semifinals games will air on CBS Sports Network. ESPNU will air the A-10 championship final, the 22nd straight year an ESPN network has televised the league's title game.
The first-round format of six games hosted by seeds 3-8 at home venues will remain. The top two seeds will continue to receive a bye to the quarterfinals.
