Richmond Drops Home Game Against VMI
09/12/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team gave up two first half goals and fell at home against VMI, 2-0, Wednesday night at Robins Stadium.
"The start of the game was unacceptable on our part," head coach Marty Beall said. "I am really proud of the team with how they responded because it would have been easy to collapse and give up five or six goals. We took the game to VMI and created some unbelievable chances but couldn't score."
In the second half, the Spiders continued their solid play with a couple of corner kicks in the first two minutes. Senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) had a header go just wide of the net in the 61st minute.
In the 75th minute, Richmond made a couple of nice runs in the offensive end but just couldn't convert. Junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) had two shots go just wide. UR also had a bouncing ball inside the box but VMI's defense was able to keep the ball off the line and clear it away in the 81st minute.
The Spiders finished with 13 shots, their second most on the season. Redshirt junior Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) played the second half and made three saves.
VMI started the game with two quick goals to take a 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the first half. VMI's Julianne Knoblett scored off a pass from Natalie Carpenter in the fifth minute. Blake Cashin gave the Keydets a 2-0 lead after scoring inside the box at the 6:56 mark.
The Spiders settled in creating a bunch of chances in the first half. In the 16th minute, senior Keaira Clark (Potomac, Md.) almost scored off a corner kick but a VMI defender was able to clear the ball out of the net.
Richmond finished the first half with seven shots, including an opportunity in the 31st minute by Beam but her attempt was saved by VMI keeper Ceci Keppeler.
"We are getting better and better every game," Beall said. "It is a credit to our leadership on this team even though the results aren't there definitely proud of the progress this team is making."
The Spiders are still waiting to hear if the potential Hurricane will affect the final non-conference game of the season set for Sunday, Sept. 16, at Old Dominion. Stay tuned for more information on richmondspiders.com.
