Spiders Drop Final Non-Conference Game At ODU
09/16/2018 | Women's Soccer
NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team finished the non-conference slate with a 4-1 loss Sunday night at Old Dominion.
"ODU is definitely the best team we've played all year," head coach Marty Beall said. "We clearly struggled with their speed and physicality in the air. I was pleased with how our girls responded to the changes at halftime. I loved the passion we played with even though we were down. Every game is an opportunity to learn and grow."
In the first half, ODU took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute as Morgan Hall scored off a corner kick.
Richmond had a chance off a corner kick as freshman Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.) took a shot on goal but Erin Davidson made the save.
The Monarchs capitalized again off a corner kick in the 30th minute as Emily Roberts scored off a header. Seven minutes later, ODU made it 3-0 after Blair Vilov scored off a turnover by the Richmond defense.
In the 43rd minute, junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) was fouled inside the box forcing a penalty kick for the Spiders. Sophomore TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) scored the PK, her second goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-1 at halftime.
The Monarchs added their fourth goal in the 59th minute when Kira Laurento scored on a shot from the top of the box.
Richmond continued to fight with a couple of shots blocked by senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) in the 69th minute. Sophomore Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a shot blocked and her second attempt was wide in the 78th minute.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made six saves and redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) had three saves in 27 minutes.
"I'm confident this team will take the positives, learn from our mistakes and will continue to improve," Beall said. "I'm really excited to start conference play Thursday night."
The Spiders will begin Atlantic 10 conference play on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. in Bronx, New York.
