Richmond Falls In Double-Overtime Heartbreaker At Fordham
09/20/2018 | Women's Soccer
BRONX, NY – The University of Richmond women's soccer team fell just short giving up a golden goal in the second overtime against Fordham, 1-0, Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 opener at Jack Coffey Field.
With three minutes left in the second overtime, Fordham took advantage of a missed clearance and Clara Gastaldi scored the game-winning goal.
"Tonight was a good hard fought conference game," head coach Marty Beall said. "Our players worked harder tonight than I've seen all year and really put our core value of loving each other into action. We were unfortunate not to put one away, especially from our set pieces which we've been working hard at in training."
The Spiders almost scored in the first minute of the second overtime after freshman Alyssa Hendricks (Grimes, Iowa) fired a shot that hit the right post after a well-placed throw in by sophomore TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.).
In the first overtime, both teams didn't have many chances with Richmond's lone opportunity coming off a corner kick and a shot attempt by junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) that went high.
In the first half, Richmond had a couple of opportunities but both teams were kept off the scoreboard. Beam had the first two shots of the half.
Sophomore Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) took a shot that went just wide in the 37th minute. UR finished with four shots in the first half.
In the second half, the Spiders forced a corner kick in the 67th minute as Anderson had a shot on goal but Fordham's goalkeeper Kelly LaMorte made the save.
UR had three corners in the second half but couldn't score on those opportunities.
Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) finished the game with five saves in 107 minutes of action. Freshman Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.) kept Fordham's offense in check playing the full 107 minutes on defense.
"We are getting better and better and I'm proud of this team even though the results haven't come yet," Beall said.
The Spiders will continue Atlantic 10 play returning home to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. Richmond will hold a free clinic after the game for their annual youth day at Robins Stadium.
