Two First-Half Goals Lift Spiders Over St. Bonaventure, 2-1
09/23/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored two first-half goals and held on late to secure its first win of the season against St. Bonaventure Sunday at Robins Stadium.
"I am really happy for our girls that we were able to come away with the victory today," head coach Marty Beall said. "The first half, I thought we were fantastic. We created some great chances but didn't capitalized on as many as we wanted to. I give a lot of credit to St. Bonaventure for how they kept battling in the second half. It is a great lesson for our team, when we step on the field no matter what the score is we need to keep fighting."
Richmond (1-9, 1-1 A-10) was aggressive offensively, taking shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. Sophomore TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) had an opportunity off a corner kick, but St. Bonaventure was able to make a team save.
The Spiders found the back of the net in the 26th minute when junior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) fired a shot from outside the box that went underneath the keeper for her first goal of the season. Sophomore Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up the assist on the play.
"Brooke did a fantastic job for us created a great goal," Beall said. "I'm happy for her in creating that goal for herself and finishing with such powerful technique."
Six minutes later, sophomore Olivia Tripodi (Arlington, Va.) tapped in a headed shot from Tritt to give Richmond a 2-0 advantage in the first half. Beam setup the play with a well-placed corner kick that found Tritt inside the box.
UR finished the first half with 11 shots and held St. Bonaventure to just two. Richmond also had five corners and only gave up one to the Bonnies.
In the second half, the Spiders had a couple of chances as senior Keaira Clark (Potomac, Md.) had a shot on goal, but St. Bonaventure's Lauren Malcolm made the save in the 53rd minute.
The Bonnies started to push forward resulting in a goal from Sabrina Sousa-Sampson in the 80th minute off a corner kick. Sousa-Sampson was able to get a piece of the corner kick and cut Richmond's lead to 2-1.
The Spiders kept St. Bonaventure off the scoreboard for the final nine minutes to earn their first A-10 win of the season.
Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg picked up the win in net, making five saves in 90 minutes. Tritt finished the game with two assists and Beam had a goal and an assist.
The Spiders will travel to Philadelphia for a road game against Saint Joseph's on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
