Spiders Fall Against Saint Louis
09/30/2018 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled early but fell against Atlantic 10 leader Saint Louis, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium. Senior Ashley Gross (Hudson, Wis.) scored her first career goal in the 87th minute.
"Unfortunately, today we didn't do the little things well and those little things cost us goals today," head coach Marty Beall said. "I thought we battled hard and moved the ball pretty well. Our defending was good at times but the little things we have to get better at especially against a top team like Saint Louis."
Saint Louis, who was picked as the favorite to win the Atlantic 10 Championship in the preseason poll, scored two first half goals to lead 2-0 at halftime.
The Billikens took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted shot by Hannah Friedrich in the 18th minute. Saint Louis added to their lead in the 31st minute as Alyssa Seitzer scored on a header off the pass from Courtney Reimer.
In the second half, Saint Louis continued to put pressure on the Richmond defense with long runs creating multiple scoring chances. The Billikens put away four goals in the second half as Seitzer added two more goals to give her a hat-trick.
In the 81st minute, Evie Lavelle added the sixth goal scoring from inside the box. The Spiders kept fighting as Gross was able to dribble her way past multiple Saint Louis defenders and score past the goalkeeper in the 87th minute. Gross scored on a shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Richmond had a couple of other opportunities but the shots were blocked by the Saint Louis defense. Redshirt freshman Emily Wigg (Richmond, Va.) made three saves in 68 minutes and redshirt junior Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) turned away three shots in 22 minutes.
"We are going to recover now and learn from today's game against one of the best teams in the conference," Beall said. "We will move forward and get ready to host Rhode Island on Thursday night."
The Spiders remain home to host Rhode Island on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
