17 regular-season home games are one shy of program record
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Richmond men's basketball team announced its 2018-19 schedule Wednesday. The 31-game regular-season schedule includes 17 home games, one shy of single-season program record. In addition to nine home contests against Atlantic 10 opponents, Richmond will host eight non-conference home games, including a December 1 visit from ACC foe Wake Forest and games against in-state rivals Old Dominion, Hampton, and Longwood.
Â
"We are thrilled to announce this season's schedule," said head coach Chris Mooney. "Our non-conference slate is very demanding and should help to prepare us for the significant challenge of the Atlantic 10."
Â
Mooney will have a chance to become the winningest head coach in Spiders history during Richmond's three-game homestand to start the season. The Spiders will host Longwood on November 9, St. Francis (N.Y.) on November 14 and IUPUI on November 16. Mooney enters the season with 237 wins at Richmond, two shy of Dick Tarrant's school record for wins by a head coach.
Â
The Spiders will then travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to face 2018 Final Four participant Loyola-Chicago in the opening round of the inaugural Fort Myers Tip-Off Classic on November 19. Richmond's second game in the tournament will be against Boston College or Wyoming on November 21. All tournament games will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1, two of at least seven games the Spiders will play on national television this season.
Â
The Spiders will return to the Robins Center for a home game against Hampton on November 25 and then face a pair of major-conference opponents in four days: traveling to take on Patrick Ewing and Georgetown on November 28 and hosting Wake Forest on December 1. The game against the Demon Deacons is presented by Bank of America and will be shown on the NBC Sports Network. It is the opener of a four-game home stand for the Spiders.
Â
Richmond will face Coppin State on December 5, Oral Roberts on December 15, and Old Dominion on December 19 at the Robins Center, where the Spiders have compiled a 118-46 (.720) Â record over the last 10 seasons, the third-most home wins of any A-10 school during that span.
Â
The Spiders will wrap up their non-conference schedule with a neutral-site game vs High Point in Washington, D.C. on December 22 and a visit to South Alabama on December 29. Richmond's 13 non-conference games are one more than last season, when the Spiders 12-game non-conference slate ranked as the 25th-most difficult in the nation.
Â
Richmond will open its 18th Atlantic 10 season on January 6 at Dayton on NBCSN. The Spiders conference home opener will be three days later on January 9 against Rhode Island, the defending A-10 regular season champions.
Â
Over the final three weeks of January, Richmond will play four of its six games on the road with trips to George Washington (January 12), Davidson (January 19 on NBCSN), Saint Joseph's (January 23), and Saint Louis (January 30) interspersed with home games against Duquesne (January 16) and St. Bonaventure (January 26).
Â
After a travel-heavy January, the Spiders will remain in Richmond for the first three weeks of February, playing four home games and a road game at crosstown rival VCU. UR's long stint in Richmond begins with a February 2 matchup against La Salle at the Robins Center, followed by home contests against George Mason (February 6) and George Washington (February 9).
Â
Richmond will be seeking its third-straight win over VCU when the Spiders make the short trip to the Siegel Center on February 13 for the first game of the Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 or ESPNU and tip at 7 PM.
Â
Following a bye, the Spiders return to the court on February 20 against Fordham at the Robins Center before a two-game road trip to La Salle (February 23) and George Mason (February 27).
Â
Richmond will host VCU in the second game of the Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic on March 2 on the CBS Sports Network before wrapping up its regular season with a March 6 visit to Massachusetts and a March 9 home game against Davidson. The 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 13-17.
Â
The only season in which the Spiders played more than 17 regular-season home games was 1954-55, when UR played 18 games at home in the regular season – the first four at the Benedictine Gym and the final 14 at Richmond Arena. UR also played 17 regular-season home games in 2014-15 and 2012-13.
Â
Last season, Richmond had the smallest enrollment of any Division I school to average at least 6,000 fans, as the Spiders registered their highest attendance in 25 years with an average crowd of 6,492 fans, ranking third in the A-10.
Â
This season, the Spiders return three of their top four scorers from a team that finished 9-9 in the Atlantic 10 (tied for fifth) and posted a winning record (9-7) over the second half of the season in 2017-18.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Grant Golden is back after earning third-team All-Conference and All-Rookie honors and setting the Spiders record for total points by a freshman (498 in 32 games - an average of 15.6 PPG). Junior Nick Sherod averaged a team-best 17.6 points per game in A-10 play last season while hitting 52 percent of his shots against the conference. And sophomore Jacob Gilyard returns after smashing the school record for steals last season while also setting new marks for assists and minutes by a Spiders freshman.
