
Spiders Drop Season Opener At William & Mary, 6-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team fell in its 2019 season opener on the road at William & Mary, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon. Junior Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) picked up a singles win at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, William & Mary took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Natalia Perry and Mila Saric defeated Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway), 6-2, at No. 3 doubles. William & Mary clinched the doubles point with a tough 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Rosie Cheng and Clara Tanielian took down sophomore Emily Dunbar and Kiana Marshall after the match was tied at 4-4.
In the final doubles match, Lauren Goodman and Charlotte Madson earned a 6-2 victory against Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Owens at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Saric gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead after winning in straight sets against senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City, Mexico), 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Owens put the Spiders on the board with a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles against Vitoria Okuyama, 6-2, 6-4.
William & Mary made it 3-1 after Cheng earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against Dunbar. At No. 5 singles, Madson took down Heiberg, 6-0, 7-5.
Tanielian won in straight sets against Zlateva, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. In the final match, Marshall battled in both sets but fell short against Perry, 6-4, 7-6 (5), at No. 2 singles. Marshall fell behind 5-1 in the second set tiebreaker but kept fighting winning four of the next six points only to lose 7-5 in the breaker.
Richmond returns to the court against Virginia on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. in Charlottesville, Virginia.
