Spiders Fall To St. Bonaventure In Nip-and-Tuck Battle
01/26/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders went toe-to-toe with visiting St. Bonaventure for 40 minutes, but a dominant performance from the foul line and some timely deep shooting led the Bonnies to a 66-57 win Saturday night at the Robins Center.
The Spiders surprised the Bonnies with a heavy dose of man-to-man defense, a change from the match-up zone they've used almost exclusively in 2018-19 entering Saturday.
The new defense was effective early, allowing the Bonnies to score just four points in the first six minutes of the game. But preseason All-A-10 selection Courtney Stockard gradually found his rhythm hitting several long jumpers en route to 14 first-half points as St. Bonaventure built a 27-22 lead at intermission.
The Bonnies lead bounced between two and seven points for the first 12 minutes of the second half before a 5-0 spurt by the Spiders gave Richmond a 48-47 advantage with just over six minutes to play.
Richmond's lead was short lived, as a nearly three-minute scoring drought followed for the Spiders before an old-fashioned three-point play by Jacob Gilyard tied the game at 51-51 with four minutes remaining.
The visitors answered with a pair of three-pointers and a dunk by freshman Osun Osunniyi sandwiched around a pair of Spiders free throws to build a six-point lead with 2:36 to go.
From there, the Bonnies made five of their six free-throw attempts to seal the win, part of their 14-16 performance from the charity stripe on Saturday.
Gilyard led Richmond with 19 points and three steals, the last of which gave him 146 for his Spiders career, passing Richmond legend Johnny Newman for eighth on the school's all-time list.
Nathan Cayo scored 14 for the Spiders, and Grant Golden added 12 with a team-high nine rebounds. Richmond hit just four of its 20 three-point attempts on the night, and is now shooting 24 percent from deep over its last four games.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday, January 30, when they travel to face A-10 foe Saint Louis. Tip-off versus the Billikens is set for 7 p.m. ET.
