RICHMOND, Va. – Rising sophomore for the University of Richmond women's soccer team Victoria Huxtable (Columbia, Md.) was invited and participated in training camp with the Jamaican Women's National Team from Jan. 14-21.
"I'm very proud of Victoria for getting the call-up for the Jamaican National Training Camp," head coach Marty Beall said. "This recognition speaks volumes about the type of player she is and how bright her future is. I know this experience will propel her to a higher level of play as she leads our back line."
Huxtable was one of 12 newcomers among 33 players in the training camp held in Kingston and Montego Bay. Jamaica head coach Hue Menzies will have to submit their list of 23 players for the FIFA Women's World Cup in France by March.
"It was an amazing opportunity to train with experienced mature players from different parts of the world," Huxtable said. "I learned the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and playing with intensity, composure, and focus. Being invited to this camp inspired me to push myself and put forth my best effort regardless of the outcome."
A native of Columbia, Maryland, started all 18 games as a defender for the Spiders. She led the team in minutes played with 1,366, including 10 full games. Huxtable played a season-high 110 minutes in a tie against Rhode Island on Oct. 4 in double-overtime.
Jamaica became the first Caribbean team to ever qualify for the World Cup after a dramatic win against Panama in PKs, 4-2, in their third-place playoff match at the 2018 Concacaf Women's Championship at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
The 2019 Women's World Cup will take place in France with Jamaica falling into Group C with Australia, Italy and Brazil.
